James W. Goldsmith was born in Marion, North Carolina.
He received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University
(B.S., cum laude, 1970), and his law degree from the University
of North Carolina (J.D., 1975). He was admitted to the North Carolina
Bar in 1975. He served in the United States Army [1st Lt.] from
1970-1972, including service in Vietnam. He attended the National
Institute for Trial Advocacy in 1979. Jim is a member of the North
Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers,
the McDowell County Bar Association, and the Bar Association of
Judicial District 29A. Before the district split into 29A and 29B,
he was the President of the 29th District Bar Association (1990-1991).
He has served on the boards of Catawba Valley Legal Services (now
Legal Aid of N.C. Inc., Morganton office) and Western Carolinians
for Criminal Justice, and he presently serves on the board of Foothills
Conservancy. Jim’s hobbies include hiking, kayaking, mycology,
bryology, plant taxonomy, and botany.
For twenty-eight years, Jim served as contract counsel for the McDowell
County Department of Social Services child abuse and neglect division,
until the agency hired in-house counsel. His other practice areas
